Siamese Cat 101: Their Story & All You Need to Know?

The Story 

The history of the Siamese Cat dates to the legendary temple of the King of Siam. It was the temple cat. The King of Siam did not love these cats only because of their beauty but also used them as guard cats. He was so attached to his cats that they would be perched all over the tall columns that surrounded the King’s throne. It is believed that if anyone threatened the King, the loyalty of the cats was such that they would pounce on them.  

The first Siamese Cat to travel from Thailand to Europe was as a gift from the King of Siam to English Consulate in Bangkok in the late 1800s. It was in the year 1898 when the Siamese Cat breed won a champion title and then this cat breed gained popularity. The Cat Fancier’s Association (CFA) officially recognized the breed as an independent breed in the year 1906.  

Siamese Cats are noisy and very vocal when it comes to expressing themselves. They have a deep, loud pitched voice. Sometimes it may even seem that they are talking to you! These cats are innately friendly and love being with their owners.

Temperament 

Siamese Cats are known for their beauty and intelligence. These cats are capable of being trained and can even walk on a leash. They are very social temperament-wise and are extroverts in everything they do. Since they show immense loyalty and develop strong bonds with their owners, they are often compared to dogs for being able to express and show love like them. The Siamese Cat is a medium sized cat that is highly intelligent, sociable, and talkative. With a deep voice, they love to talk to their owners. Due to their friendly and loyal nature, they are often compared to dogs and even called ‘dog like’. With a unique coat, they can groom easily. The coat is short and silky. They have large eyes that are almond shaped and are often blue in colour. Their long, lean legs help to keep them agile. The general weight of a male Siamese Cat is between 4 to 6 kg, whereas females weigh around 2.5 to 4.5kg.  

You can keep your Siamese Cat busy and involved with the right kind of toys. They love to be active and enjoy interaction with their humans. Be careful not to leave your Siamese Cat alone for a long time as they hate being alone. The Siamese Cat is an extremely energetic breed. They like to play and engage in physical activities. To keep them healthy and happy you need to keep them busy with games. However, like everyone, they are prone to some health conditions. They tend to get some bacterial infections such as panleukopenia, rabies and certain respiratory infections. Make sure that you get their ‘core’ vaccinations done on time. It is advised to keep in touch with your vet when it comes to their health and get their vaccinations on time. Unfortunately, they are also prone to hip dysplasia which is a painful condition that causes limping and pain.  

These cats also fall prey to bugs and fleas, so it is best to keep them protected with anti-tick and flea solutions. You can also get them checked for these bugs by getting them tested regularly.  

When to Visit the Vet?  

As a responsible pet parent, it is your duty to take your Siamese Cat for regular vet checkups. You must be up to date with their vaccinations as well. If you notice your cat exhibiting any unusual symptoms, take it to the vet immediately or book an online vet consultation. Upon reaching a senior age, you will need to take your Siamese Cat to the vet every six months to get them checked for eye problems or even heart trouble or any other age-related problem.  

Caring for a Siamese Cat 

Siamese Cats are very friendly and love to be with their human companions. They enjoy the company of their owners and sit on their laps as well!
