Emergencies tap without any warning, whether we are travelling or at home. While our homes can be well-equipped, keeping first-aid at our disposal while travelling is even more crucial. This is true for our pets are well. An emergency is an emergency be it for a human or a furry. Be prepared for small issues with this comprehensive guide to prepare your own first-aid kit at home for your purry and doggo. 

Before Getting Started….  

Collect all necessary documents and any important paperwork that might be helpful in case of an emergency. This paperwork could include, 

  • Pet’s generic details such as sex, unique identification mark, breed, any health concerns or allergies 
  • Pet’s Vaccination Record  
  • Veterinarian’s Contact Information  
  • Pet’s Medical History

Purpose: to use in case of a minor injury

Self-Adhesive Non-Stick Bandages 

Purpose: These bandages are water-repellent and self-adhesive, ideal for treating a mild injury in a doggo. These do not stick to the fur either.

Self-Adhesive Tape 

Purpose: these are breathable and much more convenient to use owing to their elasticity. Can be used to dress up small wounds with ease.

Organic Cotton Balls 

Purpose: these soft cotton balls are useful for applying medication or cleaning a small wound or cut.

3% Hydrogen Peroxide 

Purpose: Works like an antiseptic for cleansing a wound with the purpose of preventing an infection.

Antibiotic Spray/Ointment 

Purpose: For treating cuts, rashes, dry skin issues, basic allergies, and scrapes. Keep a few cotton swabs along for application

Purpose: For use in case of an emergency if a furry ingests poison. Make sure to consult your furry’s vet to determine the dosage size before giving it to them.

Prepare Your Own First-Aid Kit for Purries 

 First Aid for Cats

Saline Wound Flush or Saline Nasal Spray (like this wound wash) 

Purpose: For cleaning (irrigating) wounds, cuts and scrapes.  

Quantity: 1 

Mild Formulation Wound Disinfectant (e.g., Povidone iodine or Chlorhexidine diacetate) 

Purpose: For wound care as it is an antiseptic. The solution needs to be diluted to 0.05%. Owing to the potential risks of over and under-dilution, it is better to get the solution from your vet care provider.  

Quantity: 1 

Cotton balls and Cotton-Tipped Que tips  

Purpose: For cleaning wounds, for antiseptic application as well as for cleaning the purry’s ears and other harder-to-reach areas. Avoid using them in the purry’s eyes. It is better to take training from a veterinarian before using these on your own.  

Quantity: 1 pack 

Gauze Pads (a.k.a., Sponges)  

Purpose: For cleaning wounds and also for being used as the first layers in a bandage dressing process.  

Quantity: 5-10 pads 

Non-Stick Bandage Pads  

Purpose: Used as first layer bandage on a wound or cut so It does not stick to the wound as it begins the healing process while it absorbs blood and any inflammatory fluid that oozes from it.

Gauze Roll of 2-Inch Width (individually packaged)  

Purpose: Can be used as a dressing in isolation without the need for bulking up.

Bandage Tape 

Purpose: Used for holding different layers of bandages in place while dressing a wound and also used as ‘stirrups’ when dressing up hard-to-bandage places.  

Quantity: 3M Roll 

Blunt-Tipped Bandage Scissors  

Purpose: For safe removal of bandages, making it possible to reach difficult areas with safety.  

Quantity: 1 

Aluminum Splint Rolls 

Purpose: Ideal for minimizing movement in the injured area (s) such as legs. Go for a splint set that is covered in foam and is modable for comfort and easy movement.  

Quantity: 1-2 rolls 

Bandage Cover (Self-Adhesive) 

Purpose: Best for keeping any bandage or dressing in place. It does not need any tape. Just make sure it is not secured too tightly as it can obstruct the blood flow.  

Quantity: 1 roll 

3% Hydrogen Peroxide (or a safer alternative) 

Purpose: Can be used to induce vomiting in case the purry ingests poison. It is also used for de-skunking. Consult your vet before usage. It is not recommended for wound cleaning as it can slow down the healing process.  

Activated Charcoal 

Purpose: It is helpful for soaking poisonous or toxic substances. Always consult a vet before admistering it.  

Quantity: 1 

Antibiotic Ointment 

Purpose: Protects against bacterial infections that can happen to minor cuts and wounds. Apply it to the wound before dressing it up.  

 

Saline Drops for Eyes 

Purpose: To flush and clean your purry’s eyes in case of pollen or seed entering the eyeye and to remove any foreign object getting stuck in their eye.  

Quantity: 1 

Lubricating Eye Drops 

Purpose: To restore moisture in case of dry eyes and to ward off any irritation from the eye.  

Quantity: 1 bottle  

Digital thermometer & a Water-Based Lubricant  

Purpose: To check your purry’s temperature in case of any concerns. Since the ideal way to check their temperature is through rectal cavity, keeping a lube is recommended for easy & safe insertion.  

Emergency Thermal Blankets 

Purpose: Best for keeping the kitty warm in case of an injury or accident.

Purpose: To compress a swelling or inflammation from a bee or wasp sting, muscle pain or strain, bruising, and to cold compress a minor muscle injury.

A Pair of Curved-Tip Tweezers and an Old Credit Card 

 

Purpose: Tweezers are useful in tick identification and removal. To remove a bee or wasp stinger, use an old credit card.

CAUTION 

  • Remove any potentially harmful medication from the kit. Consult your purry’s vet before packing the medication whether it is for any allergy, insect bite, cold, muscle pain, or even a wound.  
  • Avoid keeping painkillers or anti-emetics that are within the reach of the kitty as any ingestion over a certain limit may lead to kidney failure abd eventually death.
